How to Ship Products from China to India: Complete Cost Guide for 2025
You have confirmed your supplier. The order is placed. Now your supplier asks: “How do you want to ship?”
Most first-time importers say “whatever is cheapest.” That is the wrong answer — because the cheapest option is often not the best option when you factor in time, risk, and your actual inventory needs.
Here is everything you need to know about shipping from China to India in 2025.
The 4 China-to-India Shipping Methods
1. LCL Sea Freight (Less than Container Load)
Best for: Orders between 0.5 and 10 CBM (cubic metres) — typically your first 2–3 orders
LCL means your goods share a container with other importers’ goods. You pay only for the space you use.
- Cost: ₹55–90 per kg + origin + destination handling (total often ₹12,000–30,000 for a 100–200 kg shipment)
- Transit time: 18–28 days port to port (Shenzhen/Shanghai → JNPT Mumbai or Chennai)
- Total time including customs: 25–40 days
- Minimum charge: Usually 100 kg or 0.5 CBM — whichever is greater
India ports of entry: Nhava Sheva (JNPT), Mumbai; Chennai; Mundra; Kolkata
2. FCL Sea Freight (Full Container Load)
Best for: Orders above 10–12 CBM — typically when you are doing repeat orders at scale
- 20-foot container: ~25 CBM usable — ₹45,000–1,10,000 depending on season and route
- 40-foot container: ~55 CBM usable — ₹75,000–1,80,000
- Transit time: 15–22 days port to port
- Best rate season: Jan–March (off-peak); Avoid Oct–Dec (Golden Week aftermath + peak season)
3. Air Freight
Best for: Samples, urgent restocking, high-value low-weight products, compliance documents
- Cost: ₹250–400 per kg (chargeable weight — dimensional or actual, whichever is higher)
- Transit time: 3–6 working days door to door
- Customs clearance: 2–4 additional days at Indian airport
- Minimum shipment: Usually 10–30 kg
When it makes sense: If your product is light and high-value (e.g., electronics accessories, jewellery components), air freight cost per unit may be acceptable. If your product is heavy or bulky, air freight will destroy your margin.
4. International Express Courier (DHL / FedEx / UPS)
Best for: Samples only — typically 1–5 kg
- Cost: ₹1,200–3,500 for a 1–5 kg parcel
- Transit time: 3–5 working days
- Customs: Usually handled by the courier, but duties still apply above ₹5,000 CIF value
Do not use express courier for commercial shipments — the per-kg cost is 5–8× higher than air freight and you lose control of customs clearance.
Cost Comparison: 200 kg Shipment
| Method | Freight Cost | Origin + Dest. Charges | Total | Time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| LCL Sea | ₹14,000 | ₹12,000 | ₹26,000 | 30–40 days |
| Air Freight | ₹60,000 | ₹8,000 | ₹68,000 | 5–8 days |
| Express Courier | ₹1,40,000+ | Included | ₹1,40,000+ | 4–6 days |
For a 200 kg shipment, LCL sea freight saves you ₹42,000 over air. On 500 units, that is ₹84 per unit in your pocket. This is why shipping method choice is a profit decision, not just a logistics decision.
Critical Tips for China–India Imports
- Always use a licensed Indian CHA — Do not try to self-clear. An experienced CHA knows how to classify your goods correctly and avoid examination holds.
- Get a copy of your IEC (Importer Exporter Code) before your first shipment — you cannot clear customs without it. Apply at DGFT portal in 1–2 days.
- Check if your product needs BIS / FSSAI / other certifications before shipping. Uncertified restricted goods get seized at port.
- Insure your cargo — Marine cargo insurance costs 0.15–0.3% of shipment value. The peace of mind on your first ₹80,000 order is worth ₹120–240.
